糖心少女College of Education Professor Receives Leona Tyler Award for Lifetime Achievement in Counseling Psychology

Dennis M. Kivlighan, a professor in the 糖心少女 College of Education, has been selected as the recipient of the 2024鈥2025 Leona Tyler Award for Lifetime Achievement in Counseling Psychology, presented by the (American Psychological Association Division 17).

One of the highest honors in the field, the recognizes distinguished lifetime contributions to counseling psychology. Kivlighan鈥檚 selection reflects his decades of exceptional work in counseling psychology, including research, training, education, and practice, as well as his unwavering commitment to the development of clients and students. A Fulbright Global Scholar, Kivlighan has studied group counseling across Western and Eastern cultures, furthering cross-cultural understanding in counseling practices around the world. He has also been a dedicated mentor and educator, shaping the next generation of counseling psychologists through impactful leadership.

This award is very meaningful to me because I have always strived to make a difference in the lives of my clients and students through my teaching, research, and service,鈥 said Kivlighan. 鈥淢y research aims to make counseling better, and this award signifies that I am achieving this goal. Research can and does make a difference in people鈥檚 lives.鈥

Kivlighan will be formally recognized at the Society of Counseling Psychology鈥檚 Business Meeting during the 2025 APA Convention on Saturday, August 9, and will also deliver an invited address during the 2026 APA Annual Conference, which will be published in SCP鈥檚 flagship journal, The Counseling Psychologist.
